Looking at 2021 with Deeper Energy and Commitment!

2020 — a year we will always remember! When we began the year with a renewed commitment to the human rights struggle, we couldn’t have imagined how our usual challenges would be amplified many times over with a pandemic. We have faltered and there have been losses. But more than that, we have learnt so much. About how inequality shows up in different ways, how core human concerns are the same everywhere, and how, when people do come together and hold each other’s fears and vulnerabilities with dignity and solidarity, things can change in spite of whatever comes at us. In 2020, we emerged stronger together, and it is with a commitment to staying together and to staying the entire course that we move into 2021.

This year, we worked with our ears to the ground, adopting a community-led approach to tackle the pandemic and its fallouts. We are grateful for the innumerable partnerships we formed to tackle intensifying vulnerabilities of the urban poor, extending relief in the wake of COVID-19, facilitating travel arrangements for migrant workers, engaging in advocacy to demand social security for informal workers, and more.

While the space for civic rights and freedoms has continued to shrink over the years, it has become more so within the ‘new normal’. Civil society, already operating under severe constraints, has been forced to speedily recalibrate in line with new regulations. Funding patterns have shifted again towards service-delivery, leaving out larger questions of equity and justice. Colleagues working at the grassroots level have adapted to online activism, although this can never be a long-term substitute. Continuing our work on core developmental issues means tackling evolving challenges.

All these shifts only strengthen our resolve. We draw our energy from Pash’s words, ‘hum ladenge jab tak ladne ki zarurat baaki hogi’.

As we reflect on the year that ends, and hope for a better tomorrow, sharing select highlights of 2020.
