In a world where connecting with others can be a challenge for some, I, Niyati Parmar, found a transformative experience at Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA). As a student at NMIMS Indore, my brief stint with YUVA was filled with eye-opening experiences that not only enhanced my professional skills but also reshaped my perspective on societal issues. Despite my initial reservations about stepping out of my comfort zone, the welcoming environment at YUVA made it easy to adapt and thrive.
Overcoming personal barriers
Coming from a background where I wasn’t particularly social, the idea of engaging deeply with a community-based organization was daunting. However, the supportive and inclusive culture at YUVA eased my transition. The team members were not only approachable but also eager to assist and guide me through various tasks. This nurturing environment helped me build my confidence and improved my communication skills significantly.
My Work
During my internship, I primarily focused on documenting the migration stories for the @mumbai.migration Instagram page. This involved interacting with numerous individuals who had migrated to Mumbai, learning about their unique journeys, and sharing their experiences with a broader audience. Writing these stories was not just about enhancing my writing skills; it was about giving voice to those who had embarked on arduous journeys in search of better opportunities. Additionally, I worked on an article that highlighted the challenges faced by migrant workers who are often disenfranchised and unable to vote. This task broadened my understanding of the systemic issues that need addressing to ensure a more inclusive society.
Growing up in a Resettlement Colony: A Walk with BASS
One of the most memorable experiences during my time at YUVA was participating in a walk through the resettlement colony at Lallubhai Compound in Mankhurd. The walk was led by inspiring young leaders of the Bal Adhikar Sangharsh Sangathan (BASS) children’s collective, facilitated by YUVA in earlier years. The walk was a deep dive into the real-world implications of urban resettlement and how the young leaders and other community stakeholders have made untiring efforts for social transformation.
During this walk, I learned about the various challenges faced by the residents and the innovative solutions they had implemented. For instance, the community’s efforts along with other local stakeholder groups to advocate for a bridge to reduce accidents near the railway tracks was a testament to their resilience and determination. Additionally, initiatives to create safe spaces around schools and set up nature based spaces showcased the collective power of the community in driving positive change.
Reflections and Personal Growth
My short tenure at YUVA was an intense period of learning and personal growth. It underscored the importance of community engagement and the profound impact that collective efforts can have on society. I learned to manage my time more efficiently, improved my verbal and written communication skills, and gained valuable insights into the social issues affecting urban communities.
More importantly, my experience at YUVA instilled in me a strong belief in the power of giving back to the community. It taught me that even the smallest contributions can lead to significant positive changes. The mentorship and guidance I received from my supervisor was invaluable, helping me navigate through my tasks and enhancing my overall experience.
In Conclusion
My journey with YUVA, though brief, left a lasting impact on me. Each interaction and every project I worked on contributed to my understanding of the social fabric of our cities and the changes needed to improve them. The stories I documented, the articles I wrote, and the experiences I had during the resettlement colony walk are memories that I will cherish forever.
I am deeply grateful to YUVA for providing me with this opportunity and for the endless support from the team. This experience has not only enriched my professional skills but also instilled a sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for community-driven efforts. My time at YUVA will always be a significant chapter in my journey of personal and professional growth.
