Humanity and solidarity: The need of the hour

Today, our country is struggling against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that has plagued the world. All medical services and governing bodies are working day and night to combat the disease. The Government of Maharashtra is striving to deal with this disaster in various ways, and we welcome the different strategies it is attempting to undertake.
Just a few days ago, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra announced a complete lockdown. This was necessary, but due to the sudden announcement, millions of daily wage workers — those from Dalit and tribal communities and other socially marginalized groups — living in hand-to-mouth conditions have been severely affected.The immediate crisis ahead of them is unemployment and starvation. This is a disaster, just as serious as the corona health crisis. Currently migrant workers are stuck in the wake of the closure of trains and buses. They have no work, cannot go back home and have no means to fill their stomach. They need help.
Since the past several days, the non-profit Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) has extended support to those in need by providing essential food supplies to them (rice, pulses, wheat, oil, etc). This has been possible with the support received from the people via the Together We Can initiative.
YUVA staff and community leaders have gone from door to door to provide support to the homeless and daily-wage workers, especially those working in the informal sector. This has been done in the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Vasai Virar and Palghar taluka. Putting their life and health on the line, and knowing fully well that they may be exposed to the virus even with safety precautions, the team has been working voluntarily to prevent families from starvation.
These are a few of my thoughts about distributing food supplies (ration) at an informal settlement named Ambujwadi in Malwani, Malad.
The Chief Minister had declared a ban on public gatherings, and therefore, it has been a huge struggle to reach families in need. We visited the area with all precaution, and saw anxiety and distress about the current and future situation on the faces of the people.
In one pocket of the community resides the Pardhi tribe. Their situation was devastating. From women to small children, the whole community sells small wares on the streets, but now given the current situation, where would they go when the streets are deserted? While distributing the foodgrains and ration, there was an old woman who also received the package. I told her to take good care of herself. In response she said, ‘Son, today you bring us food grains. If this situation continues, I don’t know about the disease, but we will definitely die of starvation’.
Wasim from Sai Shraddha Society, who is a bangle-seller and goes house to house selling bangles to women, says, ‘Bhaiya, how will I make a living during this lockdown? I have lost my customers. I have been sitting at home for the past 2 weeks’. There is inexplicable anxiety about the future in the minds and hearts of the people.
About 80% of the work opportunities for the community, comes from the community itself. Many are also involved in home-based work for which they receive a per-piece rate, which they say has also completely stopped in the wake of the lockdown as no products and raw materials reach them.
Those involved in waste-picking and scrap dealers have lost their source of income ever since their shops have been asked to shut down. They have come to the point of begging for their daily needs. Daily wage earners have lost all hope and continue to sit at home in distress, worrying about the future for themselves and their families.
In 2005 itself, when Ambujwadi was forcibly evicted labelling it ‘illegal’, the local population consisted of 35,000 people. It has grown many more times since then. Despite the population density, there is no single water connection in the area. As a precautionary measure against coronavirus, the primary step is to wash one’s hands and keep them sanitised and clean. In a community that has been deprived of even drinking water, how can they keep their hands and face clean? The government says that it is a fight for our safety, but how can we be safe when we do not even have our primary needs fulfilled? This is what families say. They realise that today it is a question of life and death, but without any opportunity for respite.
Amidst numerous phone calls for help, I received a call from Asif a youth group member who said, ‘Dada, the situation here is getting worse by the day’. I told him, ‘Yes, that is the condition of most places; we will try our best and reach all communities slowly and steadily’.
But today I feel that the time is now! We cannot stop. There are so many homeless people, those living in Adivasipadas (tribal hamlets), migrant workers and their families out there who need our support. Together, we must walk the path of humanity, in solidarity with their struggle.

एक प्रयत्न माणुसकीच्या वाटेवरचा !!
कोरोना नावाच्या वायरसचे आज भीषण संकट जगावर आलेले आहे, या संकटाविरुद्ध आपला देश सुद्धा झगडत आहे. यात सर्व वैद्यकीय सेवा आणि शासकीय यंत्रणा, अधिकारी तातडीने कार्य करत आहेत.
महाराष्ट्र शासन ही करोना या आपत्तीला विविध अंगाने सामोरे जाण्यासाठी प्रयत्नशील आहे, त्यांचे आम्ही स्वागत करतो. मा. मुख्यमंत्र्यांनी कालच संचारबंदी जाहीर केली आहे, जी आवश्यक आहे, परंतु अचानक केलेल्या घोषणेमुळे राज्यातील रोजंदारीवर जगणारे, हातावर पोट असणारे व स्थलांतरित लाखो मजूर, आदिवासी दलित व भटके विमुक्त समूह अधिक असुरक्षित झाले आहेत. त्यांच्यापुढील तातडीचे संकट बेरोजगारीचे व उपासमारीचे असणार आहे. ही आपत्ती करोना इतकीच गंभीर आहे. आता ट्रेन व बसेस बंद झाल्यामुळे स्थलांतरित मजूर जागोजागी अडकून पडले आहेत. त्यांना काम नाही, घरी परत जाता येत नाही व पोट भरायला आधार नाही. अशा कुटुंबांसाठी तातडीने काही मदत उपलब्ध करणे आवश्यक आहे.
याच करिता मागील आठवड्यापासून युवा संस्थेने गरजू व्यक्तिंना जीवनावश्यक वस्तु आणि धान्यवाटप करून मदतीचा हात पुढे केला आहे. युवा कार्यकर्त्यांनी घरोघरी जाऊन मुंबई, नवी मुंबई, पालघर विभागील बेघर आणि नाका, असंघटित कामगारांच्या वस्तीत गरजेची मदत पोहचवत आहेत, हां एक प्रयत्न आहे माणूसकीच्या वाटेवरचा. ह्या आपत्तीत माणसाला जागवण्याचा
या रोगाच्या संक्रमणात कदाचित आपणही येऊ शकतो हे माहीत असूनही बेघर आणि असंघटित कामगारांची उपासमार होऊ नये यासाठी कार्यकर्ते संस्थेने सुट्टी जाहिर करूनही स्वत:हून स्व-इच्छेने काम करीत आहेत.
याच प्रयत्नात काल २३ मार्च रोजी मालवणी येथील अंबुजावाडी वस्तीत वाटप करण्याचा एक प्रयत्न झाला. मुख्यमंत्र्यांनी जमाव बंदी जाहीर केली होती आणि या काळात वस्तीत जाऊन लोकांना नियोजनबद्ध पद्धतीने घोळका न होऊ देता गरजू कुटुंबापर्यंत मदत पोहचाविणे ही मोठी कसरत होती. या प्रयत्नात भविष्याची चिंता आणि तात्पुरती भागलेली गरज अशा दोन छटा लोकांच्या चेहऱ्यावर बघायला दिसल्या.
तसेच काल पारधी पाड्यात पोहचलो असताना खूप वाईट परिस्थिती जाणवली. बायकांपासून लहान पोरांपर्यंत संपूर्ण समाज मुंबईतील नाक्यावर छोट्या छोट्या गोष्टी विकतात पण आज नाके ओस पडल्यावर कुठे जाव? अशाच मध्ये एक साधारण ६० वर्षाच्या आजीबाईना बोललो ‘काळजी घ्या’ म्हणल्या ‘पोरा आज धान्य आणून दिलस हा करोना असाच राहिला तर रोगापेक्षा अन्ना वाचून मरू’.
साईं श्रद्धा सोसायटी मधील वसिम जो बांगड्या घरोघरी जाऊंन हातात भरतो, तो म्हणतो — ‘हाथ ही काम के नही रहे दादा.. चुडिया कैसे भरेंगे.. पिछले दो हप्ते से घर पे बैठा हु’ खरोखर भविष्याच्या चिंतेने त्याच्या मनावर एक प्रकारचे दडपण दिसून येत होते. मनाची घालमेल वाढत गेली. अंबुजावाडी या वस्तीतील जवळपास ८० टक्के रोजगार हे वस्तीतुनच तयार होतात. पुष्कळ लोकानी सांगीतले घरी जे माल बनवायला काम यायचे ते बंद झाले. कचरावेचक समूहाचा दुकाने बंद झाल्यामुले रोजगार थांबला आहे आज भीक मागायची वेळ त्यांच्यावर आली आहे. नाका कामगार घरी बसून डोक्याला हात लावून भविष्याची चिंता करीत आहेत.
२००५ साली अनधिकृत म्हणून तोड़मोड़ झालेल्या या वस्तीत जवळ पास ३५००० लोक रहात आहेत परंतु आजही पाण्याचा नळ या वस्तीत आला नाही. कोरोना विरुद्धच्या लढाई मध्ये शरीर स्वच्छ ठेवणे ही प्राथमिक गरज आहे. पण पाणी नाकारल्या गेलेल्या या वस्तीत कसे हाथ तोंड स्वच्छ ठेवायचे? माझी लढाई माझी सुरक्षा पण या सुरक्षेसाठी आमच्या कड़े कुठे आहेत प्राथमिक सुविधा ? आज हे सर्व येथे रहाणारे प्रत्येक कुटुंब विचारत आहे, ही विषमतेची लढाई आम्ही खुप अगोदर पासून लढत आलो आहोत. आज जीवन मरणाचा प्रश्न झाला आहे हे त्यांच्या निरागस डोळ्यात साफ़ दिसत होते.
पुष्कळ फोन येत आहेत, दोन दिवसापुर्वी आसिफ म्हणून एका युवकाचा फोन आला होता तो म्हणत होता ‘दादा बहुत बुरी सिचुएशन है कुछ करना चाहिये ‘मी म्हंटल, सभी जगह है भाई, थोड़ा थोड़ा कर के सभी बस्तीयो में पहुचते है !!’
पण आज वाटतय, आताच वेळ आहे, थांबल नाही पाहिजे. आज, अशा बेघर, आदिवासी, नाका कामगार आणि असंघटित कामगारांच्या कुटुंबाला जगण्यासाठी आपल्या सहकार्याची गरज आहे. कामगार जगला तर देश जगेल. माणूसकीच्या या वाटेवर सर्वांनी एकत्र येऊन त्यांना जगवण्यासाठी प्रयत्न केला पाहिजे.
