This two-part series comprises letters to the self, written by YUVA colleagues as they work across communities of Mumbai, facilitating access to legal entitlements and basic services. This is the first part of the series. The second part can be read here.
I. Sana
Dear Sana,
This letter is to talk about the last 12 months of your journey in which you have worked for basic service facilitation for people of a community called Sathe Nagar, in Mankhurd, which is another city within this mega city called Mumbai. This new journey of working as a facilitator, with a new perspective has been a complete roller coaster ride.
In the beginning of this journey, I remember how nervous you were as this was your first time working in this community and on a project, you did not know much about. But I appreciate your courage in showing confidence in yourself and going to the field alone.
Sathe Nagar and Lallubhai communities were challenging spaces to work in, but also filled with opportunities. The community looks like a small Lego board, with structures and buildings. Lego itself means to put together or build, so I was wondering how we are going to put all these things together and do our best in facilitating people’s needs.
On the ground, our first task was to find a space for the centre, which was a challenge in this R&R colony. There were a lot of twists and turns waiting for you. At one point, you were so disappointed in yourself that you were not able to find a single room. But with a twist at the end, you found a small room in Sathe Nagar, Laxmi Chawl, which at the end turned into a space that has its own life.
At first, to understand the community better we did community mapping, finding and building relationships with stakeholders, organising document registration camps, health camps, awareness sessions, etc. in the community. We started building our understanding of the community needs on the ground, trying to organise all the pieces together.
People of Sathe Nagar struggle for their identity documents and this is part of why we also named our centre ‘Astitva’. The struggle for address proof among residents of Sathe Nagar is immense, which was a cause of worry for us too. But it also gave us another reason and motivation to work in this community.
The most sudden and very blindsiding turn, was when the pandemic hit us again and the lockdown was imposed. Most challenging was to continue doing our work in the community with new needs as this is a community of people who are predominantly daily wage workers. And as we know they were the most affected population by the pandemic. YUVA’s ration relief work during the pandemic was a small support we could provide to this big community. But when I understood that what we were doing was not enough and the community’s needs are much higher especially in times like this, I could see you in complete despondency.
But I also understand the importance of our work in this community in situations like these, where making people’s documents can help them avail schemes which will be beneficial for them in the long run. This encouraged you to do your best in your job and reach as many people in the community as possible.
When we again started working on the field, another challenge in this ride was waiting for us. We found a group of construction workers struggling for their BOCW registration, for which they have been trying to get their 90 days’ work certificate from their respective ward office for the last 2 years. It was a challenge to handle their frustration and also to do the needed advocacy with the system. But after a continuous follow up and advocacy for one month we were finally able to get their 90 days certificate for the registration and after around 25 days we successfully completed their registration process of Building and Other Construction Workers Board and finally they all got their BOCW cards.
It was one of the biggest achievements for you as this registration will support them for their life and they can avail a number of schemes and benefits from it. This feeling was relieving for the workers and satisfactory. As you had never done anything like this before, it gave you a different level of confidence.
This whole journey did not only revitalise you professionally but also gave you an opportunity to meet a lot of different people and build various relationships in the community. Now this community which you thought was a roller coaster in the beginning has become your favorite place to be in.
I appreciate your efforts and thank you for also being ready to adopt the change, accepting, and learning new things while facing all the challenges with an open heart. Thank you and also thanks to the community of Sathe Nagar for teaching you a lot about itself and yourself.

प्रिय गौरव,
मेरा नाम मतदान पहचान पत्र है | मुझे बेहद खुशी है की, युवा अर्बन इनिशिएटीव्ह्स संस्था के अंतर्गत आपने बस्ती के लोगोंको मेरा महत्व समझाकर उनके दिल में मेरे लिए जगह बनाई और हमारे बिच की दुरी को खत्म किया है | जिस वजह से उन्होंने देश तथा राज्यों में होनेवाले चुनाव में किसी प्रतिभागी को वोट करने का अधिकार प्राप्त किया है | साथ ही वह देश के विकास में अपना बहुमूल्य योगदान दे सकते है | बस्ती के लोगोंको केवल इलेक्शन में वोट देने का अधिकार ही नहीं मिला बल्कि लोगोंको पहचान भी मिली की, वह भारत के नागरिक है |
बस्ती के लोगोंको मुफ्त में सेवा देकर मुझे मेरे मतदाता से मिलाने की अहम भूमिका आपने बखुबी निभाई इसीलिए, में आपका शुक्रिया अदा करता हूँ |

III. Bala Akhade
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली
नोव्हेंबर 2020 ची पहाट झाली, नवीन कामाची सुरूवात झाली,
ऑफीस साठी जागा बघण्याची लगबग झाली,
शेवटी गणपत पाटील नगर वस्ती कन्फर्म झाली,
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली…
वस्ती बघितली, लोकांसोबत ओळख झाली,
प्रत्यक्षात काम करण्याची संधी मिळाली ,
स्वतः पुढाकार घेऊन कौशल्य दाखवण्याची वेळ आली,
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली.
डिसेंबर मधील पहिली तारीख झाली,
लोकांच्या मनात विश्र्वास निर्माण करण्याची उमेद मिळाली,
डॉक्युमेंट्स, नवीन योजना योजना लोकांपर्यंत पोहोचवण्यासाठी YUI ची तिकीट मिळाली,
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली.
लोकांचा विश्वास डगमग होण्यास सुरूवात झाली,
पुन्हा नव्याने जानेवारीत जोमाने कामाची पडताळणी केली,
कागदपत्र बनवून देण्यासाठी पूर्ण प्रक्रिया समजून घेतली,
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली.
प्रत्येक सेंटरवर कामाची गती वाढण्यासाठी दोन साथिंची नियुक्ती केली,
सेंटर सांभाळण्याची जबाबदारी दोघांनीही घेतली,
मग दोघांच्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली..
घरेलु कामगार चे रजिस्ट्रेशन असो वा आधारकार्ड,पॅनकार्ड ची नोंदणी जणू सोपी वाटू लागली,
काम करण्याची प्रबळ इच्छाशक्ती निर्माण झाली,
थोडे रुसवे फुगवे होत गेली, त्यातून मार्ग काढिला प्रेमाची नाती जोडली,
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली.. .
बघुनी काम, सरकारी अधिकारी ऑफिसात धावत आली,
तोंड भरुनी कौतुक केले YUI ची पाठ थोपवली,
लोकांनीही कामाची पोचपावती आम्हास दिली
माझ्या कामाची, अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली….
दिली गेलेली टारगेट फक्त कामासाठी मिळाली,
परंतू त्यातूनी ज्ञानाची भरमसाठ वाढ झाली,
सहा सेंटर मधील साथींची कामातून घट्ट मैत्रीही झाली,
या कामातून स्वतः ला समजून घेउन पुढे जाण्याची उमंग मिळाली,
स्वतः चे अस्तित्व सर्वांसमोर मांडण्याची ताकत मिळाली,
माझ्या कामाची अनुभवाची शिदोरी सुसाट निघाली….

IV. Suman
मेरा नाम सुमन गुलाबचंद मौर्या है ! युवा में मुझको काम करते हुए आज पूरे २८ दिन हुए ! युवा से जुड़ने के बाद मुझको बहुत सारी चीजें सीखने मिली, जैसे कि डॉक्यूमेंट में क्या-क्या चीजें आती है, उसका क्या प्रोसेस होता है, जैसे की, श्रम कार्ड, हेल्थ कार्ड, वोटर आईडी, पैन कार्ड, पैन कार्ड से आधार लिंक करना, उसे किस तरीके से आनलाइन बनाया जाता है, उसको बनाने के लिए कौन कौन से डॉक्यूमेंट की जरूरत होती है, जो दस्तावेज हम बना रहे हैं, उसका क्या-क्या फायदा होता है और हम ये सभी को लेकर कम्युनिटी में किस तरह से काम करते हैं ये और अन्य कई चीजे मैंने गए २८ दिनों में सिखने की कोशिश की !
ये सभी काम के साथ कम्युनिटी में जो अंगनवाड़ी टीचर हैं, उनके साथ मिलकर बस्ती के लोगों का दस्तावेज बनाना और इस प्रक्रिया में कम्युनिटी के लोगो का सहभागिता लेना ये भी सिखने की कोशिश की ! बस्ती के लोग भी हमारे काम को देखते हुए हमारी सहायता करते है, वह हमें बस्ती में इंटरनेट, टेबल यह सारी चीजों कि व्यवस्था भी करके देते है और फिर हम वहा कैंप लगा के लोगो का दस्तावेज बनाते है। इसके साथ साथ हम ने युवा द्वारा मुफ्त आँखों का जांच करने का कैंप भी लगवाया था ! वहा पर काफी लोग अपने आखों का चेकअप करवाने आए थे, कैंप दौरान लोगों के साथ अच्छा रिश्ता बन गया ! युवा में जुड़ने के बाद यह मेरा सफर कुछ इस तरीके से चल रहा है, हर एक दिन नई नई चीजे सीखने मिलती है और इस वजह से मैं बहुत खुश रहती हूँ !

V. Usha
उषा जैसे ही मेने तुम्हे देखा तो मुझे बोहत ख़ुशी हुई क्योंकि वैसे तो हमारा रिश्ता २०१९ से हे पर बिच में ही तुम मुझे छोड़ के चली गई| मैं बोहत परेशांन हो गया था की मेरे बस्ती के लोगों का क्या होगा, पर जब पता चला की इस बार तुम मेरे बस्ती के लिए कुछ नई चीजे लेकेआयी हो जैसे की ‘डाक्यूमेंट्स’, तन मुझे और भी ख़ुशी हुई क्योंकि में बोहत वक्त से अपने बस्ती को लेकर चिंतित था की, लोग यहाँ रेह तो रहे हे पर लोगो के पास कोई भी बहुत से डाक्यूमेंट्स नहीं है और उसी वजह से उनको काम मिलने में दिक्कत होती है, बच्चों के स्कूल में एडमिशन केल्य दिक्कत होती है और वो बाकी सरकारी योजनाओं तक भी नहीं पहुच पाते|
जब तुम्हे सेंटर के लिए जगह मिला और वहा से तुम्हारा सफ़र शुरू हुवा तबसे लेकर आज तक मैंने तुम्हारे १ साल के सफ़र में बोहत उतार–चढाव देखे है| जब तुमने इस बस्ती में पहला कैंप लगाया था तब तुमको बोहत प्रोब्लम हो रहा था| तुम्हे लोगो को बुलाने से लेकर कैंप कहा लगाना है इन सभी कामों में तुम्हे सिर्फ प्रॉब्लम ही आ रहा था|
बस्ती में तुम्हे पोलिटिकल लोगों की वजह से या वहा के मंडल के लोगों की वजह से या कुछ अन्य लोगो की वजह से काम करने में काफी तकलीफ भी हो रही थी| पर उनके साथ भी तुमने बोहत अच्छी तरह से डील किया और उनको भी अपनी तरफ ले लिया| उन्हें भी अपने बस्ती में काम करने के लिए मोटिवेट किया|
मुझे बोहत ही बुरा लग रहा था जब तुम मेरे बस्ती के लोगो के लिए सरकारी ऑफिसर से मिल रही थी पर उन लोगों ने ठीक से बात नहीं किया और जिन्होंने बात किया भी उन्होंने मदत करने से मना कर दिया| पर तुम वहा भी डरी नहीं उनसे बार- बार मिली और लोगो के दिक्कतों के बारे में और उसके वजह से उन्हें होने वाले प्रॉब्लम के बारे में बात करना जारी रखा|
बिच में ही कोरोना की वजहसे हमारा मिलना फिर से बंद हो गया पर मुझे आशा थी की हम फिर मिलेंगे क्योंकि हमारा रिश्ता बोहत ही गेहरा बन चूका था| मुझे बोहत ही ख़ुशी होती हे ये बताते हुए की कोरोना के वजह से जब मेरे बस्ती के लोगो का जॉब चला गया था और उनके पास खाने के लिए कुछ नहीं था तब तुम वहा लोगो के लिए राशन लेके आए और उसी वजह से मेरे बस्ती के लोगो के चेहरे पर ख़ुशी देखने मिली|
मुझे तुम्हारी वजह से तुर्भे स्टोर बस्ती से जलन हो गई क्योंकि मेरी बस्ती से ज्यादा तुमने तुर्भे स्टोर के बस्ती को महत्व दिया| डॉक्यूमेंट कैंप से लेकर हेल्थ कैंप तक सभी तुमने इस बस्ती में किया| पर हाँ, तुमने तुर्भे-स्टोर बस्ती में भी बोहत सारे अलग–अलग लोगो के साथ रिश्ता बनाया| मुझे ख़ुशी है की तुम आए थे अकेले पर अब तुम्हारे पास इतने लोग है की तुम्हे जब भी किसी भी चीज की जरुरत होती है, कैंप को लेके या मीटिंग को लेके तो तुम्हे लोगो का सपोर्ट मिला| तुमने घर के जैसा रिश्ता बस्ती के लोगो से बनाया, बोहत सारी बात है तुम्हारे से कहने के लिए पर जितना बात करे उतना कम ही है| मैं दिल से धन्यवाद देना चाहता हूँ तुमको और युवा को जिन्होंने मेरी बस्ती के बारे मे सोचा और उनकी मदत करने के लिए आगे आये|
