युवा ही एक सामाजिक संस्था मागील ३७ वर्षांपासून देशातील ५ राज्यांमध्ये मानवी हक्कांना घेऊन कार्यरत आहे. ऑक्टोबर २०२० पासून रायगड विभागात हि युवा संस्थेचे काम सुरु झाले. युवा साथींकडून पनवेल भागातील वस्त्यांचा शोध सुरु झाला आणि पनवेल भागातील प्रत्येक कामगार नाका, मार्केट आणि वस्त्यांमध्ये जनजागृती कॅम्प घेण्यात आले आणि बघता बघता ४ ते ५ महिन्यातच ७ ते ८ वस्त्यांमध्ये युवाचे काम सुरूही झाले, त्यातीलच एक वस्ती म्हणजे जुने पनवेल म्हणजेच ओल्ड पनवेल मधील ‘तक्का दर्गा’ या विभागात ३० ते ३५ घरांचा आदिवासी पाडा. इथे राहणारे लोक साधारणतः कातकरी समाजाचे असल्याने त्यांच्या वस्तीला आदिवासी पाडा म्हटलं जातं. शहरात राहणाऱ्या आदिवासी अथवा शेतकरी समूहाला शहरात शेती करणे अशक्य असते त्यात हि या वस्तीतील लोकांनी ५ वी पर्यंतचे शिक्षण देखील घेतले नाही, अशिक्षितांचे प्रमाण जास्त आहे. त्यामुळे येथील रहिवासी महिला व पुरुष वर्ग दोघेही नाका कामगार काम करतात आणि काही प्रमाणात महिला घरकामाला देखील जातात. या वस्ती मध्ये युवाचे साथी जनजागृतीसाठी गेले असताना वस्तीतील काही लोकांशी भेटून तेथील लोकांचे प्रश्न समजून घेतले, संस्थेच्या कामाची माहिती दिली व तेथील घरकाम करणाऱ्या महिलांचे व नाका कामगारांचे रेजिस्ट्रेशन फॉर्म भरण्यासाठी प्रक्रिया सुरु केली.
लोकांचे विश्वास संपादन करण्यासाठी काही काळ अजून ही लागणार होता. लॉकडाऊन पूर्णपणे बंद केला नसल्याने अजून ही लोकांच्या कामाची तारांबळ चालूच होती त्यातच युवा संस्थेच्या वतीने आदिवासी पाड्यातील प्रत्येक घरात महिन्याचे राशन पुरविण्यात आले. ज्यामुळे लोकांचा विश्वास मिळविण्यासाठी मदद मिळाली. अश्याप्रकारे युवा चे काम वस्तीमध्ये सुरु झाले. कामाच्या सुरुवातीलाच वस्तीची पाहणी करून वस्तीच्या मूलभूत गरजा जसे कचरा कुंडी, नाला आणि शौचालयासाठी स्वाक्षरी मोहीम घेण्यात आली व त्याचे पत्र नगरपालिकेत जमा करण्यात आले. या पत्रासंबंधात वस्तीतील लोकांसोबत चर्चा करण्यासाठी वस्तीला युवा साथींनी दुपारच्या वेळेत भेट दिली तेव्हा तिथे ८ ते ९ लहान मुलांचा ग्रुप पत्ते खेळताना निदर्शनास आला. यासंबंधी त्यांच्या पालकांशी चर्चा केल्यावर त्यांनी सांगितले कि शाळा बंद आहेत, ऑनलाईन शाळा आहे पण स्मार्ट मोबाईल नाहीयेत, जास्त बाहेर कुठे जाऊ शकत नाहीत, करणार तरी काय मुलं? म्हणून ते खेळतात पत्ते..
त्यावर युवा साथींनी कल्पना सुचविली कि या मुलांसाठी इथेच वस्तीमध्ये बालवाडी सुरु केली तर पालकांना चालेल का ? तेव्हा सर्व पालकांकडून होकार मिळाला व १ हफ्त्याच्या आत तिथे लहान मुलांसाठी बालवाडी सुरु करण्यात आली, त्या प्रक्रियेला नाव देण्यात आले ‘सुट्टीची शाळा ’.
सुट्टीच्या शाळेचा पहिला दिवस २३ ऑगस्ट २०२१
कल्पना सुचली, वस्तीतून होकार आला पण त्या बालवाडीसाठी शिक्षक पाहिजे तर त्या मुलांना शिकवणार कोण? हा प्रश्न होताच. त्या वेळेस डॉन बॉस्को या संस्थेतील कार्यकर्त्यांसोबत असलेली ओळख येथे फायद्याची ठरली कारण डॉन बॉस्को हि संस्था वस्त्यांमध्ये लहान मुलांच्या बालवाडी चालवतात. त्यांचे पनवेल मधील कार्यकर्ते यांची भेट घेऊन विषय समजावण्यात आला तेव्हा त्यांनी वस्तीत बालवाडी चालवण्यासाठी जागीच होकार दिला व एक दिवस ठरवून परत डॉन बॉस्कोतील मॅथीव सर यांच्यासोबत आदिवासी पाडा वस्ती व्हिजिट करून वस्तीत बालवाडी कुठे चालू करणार, कोणती तारीख असणार अश्या सर्व गोष्टी फायनल करण्यात आल्या.२३ ऑगस्ट २०२१ ला सुरु झालेल्या बालवाडी मध्ये सुरुवातीला ७ विद्यार्थ्यांचा समावेश होता.
या बालवाडी — सुट्टीच्या शाळेचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे या शाळेत मुलांना शाळेतील उजळणी, वाचन आणि लिखाण तर शिकवलेच जाते पण त्या व्यतिरिक्त या मुलांना खेळामार्फत जीवनकौशल्यासंबंधित धडे दिले जातात.
काही खेळ खेळताना
घरात आई वडिलांना कामात मदत करणे, मोठ्यांचा आदर करणे, इतर मुलांसोबत भांडण न करता प्रेमाने राहणे व शिवी देण्याची सवय बंद करण्याचे देखील शिकवले जाते. हि शाळा आठवड्यातून एक दिवस दर सोमवारी दीड ते दोन तासासाठी वस्तीतच भरते.
या महिन्याचा दिवाळी सण देखील आपण या मुलांसोबत साजरा केला
शाळेच्या प्रक्रियेला वस्तीतील लोकांचा देखील खूप चांगला प्रतिसाद मिळत आहे व मोठ्या आवडीने मुलांना या शाळेत पाठवतात. लॉकडाऊन च्या नियमांनंतर शाळा जरी सुरु झाल्या तरीही हि शाळा चालूच राहील. युवा संस्था आणि डॉन बॉस्को यांच्या साथींनी मिळून चर्चा केली आहे व अभ्यास वर्ग सुरु करण्याच्या तयारी करीत आहोत. ६ ते ७ विद्यार्थ्यांपासून सुरु झालेल्या सुट्टीच्या शाळेत आत २० पेक्षा जास्त विद्यार्थी आहेत. खूप आवडीने विद्यार्थी या शाळेत सहभाग घेतात आणि २३ नोव्हेंबर २०२१ ला या सुट्टीच्या शाळेला ३ महिने देखील पूर्ण झाले आहेत.

Suttichi Shala
One of the identified settlements in Panvel, ‘Takka Darga’ has around 35 households, all belonging to the ‘Katkari’ community. In Maharashtra the Katkari have been designated a Particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG). The primary occupation of the community is related to agriculture but in cities like Panvel all of them work as naka (daily wage) workers and some women also work as domestic workers. During the second lockdown these families faced difficulties like any other informal worker groups — limited income and shortage of food. Since YUVA started its work in the community the teams helped the community by providing ration relief.
This rapport became strong when the team started identifying problems related to basic services in the community with community participation. The teams facilitated processes to identify issues like drainage system, toilet facilities etc. and initiated processes to resolve these issues by signature drives and negotiation with local municipal departments. During one of the such community meetings team members found a group of 8–9 children playing cards instead of attending online classes. When the team members spoke with their parents they found out that schools are not open and they do not have smart phones for online classes. ‘They have nothing to do and they can’t go out much, what will the children do? So they play cards’ said the parents. After this discussion one of the team members suggested starting an anganwadi in the community. They shared this idea with the parents and they agreed and within one week (on August 23, 2021) the anganwadi was started. It was named ‘Suttichi Shala’ (Holiday School).
The idea started taking shape but the teams faced their fist challenge — finding teachers for ‘Suttichi Shala’. As soon as the question arose the team started searching options and one of the old connections with an organisation called Don Bosco came to the rescue. The teams initiated dialogue with Don Bosco and they agreed to take this responsibility as they were already running such anganwadis in a few communities. The Don Bosco team visited the settlement and ‘Suttichi Shala’ started in the community in the month of August. Initially the process started with 7 children and the current number is 20.
The important aspect of this school which stands out is the methodology and content. The Don Bosco teams not only work with children on reading, writing and revision of their school content but also on their life skills through games and other activities. The Don Bosco team also works with children on their relationships with parents and other children in the community. The entire focus of this intervention is not only on education but also behavioral change.
Currently the ‘Suttichi Shala’ is functional and children spend 1.5 to 2 hours every week on Monday learning important life skills. The initiative received an overwhelming response from the families of children and other community members. The community has decided that the school will continue to operate even after lockdown.
