Urbanization is the engine that propels the world towards prosperity in the 21st century and youth are the engineers. Youth are society’s most essential and dynamic human resource.
Cities of Youth: Cities of Prosperity, UN Habitat
Youth are the leaders of today, not tomorrow! Especially in India, where over 50 per cent of the population comprises young people, the 600 million youth have a critical role to play in shaping urban futures.
Cities are changing drastically. On the one hand, urban development trajectories aim to build world-class cities with state-of-the-art facilities. Yet, these pursued pathways are often exclusionary, widening the inequality gap, pitting classes against one another, destroying traditional habitats and scarring the environment in irrevocable ways. The question of change is an inevitable reality, but it is worth considering whether the nature of change being pursued at present is one that only favours a few or takes into consideration the needs of the majority.
Young people can offer a powerful clarion call to make both the public and governments pay heed to demands for a more promising future, that places justice, equity and inclusiveness at the centre of all efforts. Historically, youth have driven efforts with innovation and creativity. Their leadership can give shape to the vision of co-creating more sustainable and inclusive cities. Their informed critical engagement with state and non state actors can go a long way towards ensuring more stable and accountable futures.
Here’s where City Caravan works to make all the difference, by offering a collective vision for change and demonstrating how individual and collective efforts can be channelised towards this, helping the youth take a participatory approach to co-create their own city.
City Caravan: Let’s Co-Create the City
With over 35 years’ experience of engaging with youth in urbanisation and governance processes, Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) brings you the fourth edition of City Caravan, a course on co-creating inclusive cities with youth. The course aims to equip participants with the right knowledge, skills and attitude to help them co-create inclusive cities.
Our theory of change is a threefold process. At the first stage, we invite young people to introspect on and consider change at the level of self and one’s identity. This is closely followed by the community-focused approach, guiding the youth to drive local change in a systematic way. The third stage intends to help the youth drive change at the city-level and beyond. At the end of the course, participants can implement individual and collective action within their communities and beyond, based on the learnings gained.
The City Caravan, shares and co-creates knowledge on various themes concerning cities, the urbanisation process, and the role of youth in cities. The course ushers in fresh perspectives and worldviews to observe and reflect on varied issues with a critical lens. Finally, it equips the youth with skills so they may be able to use the knowledge and perspectives gained to deliver change. Some of the broad themes that the course intends to cover are:
Critical appreciation and history of the urbanization process
The role of governance, market and people in shaping the city
The role of advocacy through campaigns and rights movements in cities
The role of communication in driving social change

Reviews of the City Caravan
This program introduced me to stalwarts in the field of social work, and I now feel confident to take on issues of not just at the city level (in Mumbai), but even beyond!
The concept of inclusive city helped understand how different members come together to know about difficulties faced, and what types of advocacy should be used to solve such problems. The session on The Street Vendors Act 2014 and on the Constitution were my favorite sessions as I derived just the information that I really needed.
I have worked on a lot of issues at the basti level, but after attending this course my capacity for thinking about larger social and political issues has really expanded, and the knowledge gained gives me strength to carry on this work.
